Can you visit Mount Olympus from Athens in a day?

Yes, but it is a long one: the guided day tour from Athens takes about 13 hours, with roughly 4 hours on the train each way to Katerini.

The day tour from Athens meets its guide at Katerini and continues by minibus to Dion, Platamon Castle, the Bath of Zeus pool in the Enipeas gorge and time on your own in Litochoro. How do you get to Mount Olympus by train or on your own?

Regional trains run from Thessaloniki to Litochoro station, about 6 km from town, and to Katerini. By car, Litochoro is about 90 km from Thessaloniki, and a paved mountain road climbs about 18 km from there to Prionia.

• Regional train: line T1 from Thessaloniki stops at Katerini and Litochoro, with up to 8 trains a day each way. Intercity trains stop at Katerini but not at Litochoro.
• From the station: Litochoro station is on the coast, so you still need a taxi or a lift into town.
• By car: the road to Prionia, at about 1,100 m, is narrow and winding, and it is the highest point on the mountain you can drive to. Parking there includes overnight spaces.
• With a guided train day: the day trip by train includes the return train to Katerini and guided visits to Dion and Platamon Castle.
• From Katerini: the minibus tour meets at the station and adds a gorge walk to the Bath of Zeus, with a tour leader rather than a licensed guide.

Is Mount Olympus in Greece worth visiting?

Yes. It is the highest mountain in Greece, the home of the gods in myth, Greece's first national park since 1938 and, since July 2026, a UNESCO World Heritage site for both nature and culture.

Even if you never go above the forest, the foot of the mountain rewards a visit: the stone streets of Litochoro, the pools and waterfalls of the lower slopes and the ruins of Dion, all within a short drive. Why is Mount Olympus so famous?

Because Greek myth made it the home of the twelve Olympian gods, and Homer carried that story to the world. At its foot, Dion was the Macedonian sanctuary of Zeus.

Names on the mountain still echo the myth. Stefani, one of the highest peaks, is known as the Throne of Zeus, and the Plateau of the Muses lies below it. Mytikas, at 2,918 m, is the highest point of Olympus and of Greece. Where is the best place to see Mount Olympus?

From Platamon Castle, a 13th-century fortress above the sea, from Dion and from Litochoro. On clear days you can also see the massif across the gulf from the Thessaloniki waterfront.

• Dion: the peaks stand directly above the ruins, especially in late light.
• Litochoro: the town looks straight into the mouth of the Enipeas gorge.
• Thessaloniki: the waterfront and the Upper Town look across the Thermaic Gulf, but only when the air is clear.
• Prionia: the end of the road, where the forest closes in and you look up at the cliffs.

Is the Acropolis on Mount Olympus?

No. The Acropolis is in Athens, just over 400 km south of Litochoro by road. Mount Olympus is in northern Greece, between Thessaloniki and Larissa.

The confusion is understandable: both are famous symbols of ancient Greece and both are tied to the gods. The Parthenon on the Acropolis was a temple to Athena in the city, while Olympus was imagined as the gods' home on a real mountain far to the north. You can see both on one trip, but they are a long day's travel apart.

Is Mount Olympus bigger than Noah's ark?

The question mixes up two mountains: the story of Noah's ark belongs to Mount Ararat in Turkey, at 5,137 m, not to Olympus. Mount Olympus in Greece rises to 2,918 m.

Other mountains share the name too. Olympus Mons on Mars is the giant of them all, rising more than 20 km. Mount Olympus in Washington, USA, reaches about 2,432 m, and Mount Olympus in Cyprus 1,952 m. The Greek one is the original, and the one the gods were said to live on.
